Situated in the beautiful Hinuera Valley of the Waikato, you are surrounded by spectacular, Ignimbrite rocks that carve the Valley.
Before the eruptions of Taupo about 300,000 years ago, The Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest River, flowed through the Hinuera Valley and eventually entered the Hauraki Gulf.
The eruptions caused the direction of the river to change, leaving us with the valley as we see today.
If the volcano creates a stable plume/cloud, rocketing to great heights, the pumice and ash is blown sideways and collapses to the ground decorating it like snow. If the mass is too cool, it cannot rise as high and suddenly falls to the earth at pace, creating a flow that moves across the land at incredible speed. When the pumice and ash settles, it is hot enough to stick together to form the rock, Ignimbrite.
